M.P. Baker Library to host Pleasant Hill Quilters on February 3
The M.P. Baker Library at Panola College will host the Pleasant Hill Quilters of Linden, Texas, for a special on-campus presentation on February 3 from noon to 1 p.m., highlighting undertold stories preserved through the art of quilting. This engaging program is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and community members, with a light lunch being served.
The Pleasant Hill Quilters are known for their unique presentations that combine quilts, traditional songs, and storytelling to demonstrate how patterns, symbols, and music have been used across generations to communicate meaning and preserve history. Dressed in period-inspired bonnets and aprons, members of the group bring history to life through interactive demonstrations that highlight quilting as both an artistic and narrative tradition.
During the presentation, attendees will learn about the meaning behind historically significant quilt patterns, including the North Star sampler and other symbolic designs; how quilts and songs were used to share guidance, direction, and community knowledge; and the role of quilting in preserving heritage, memory, and shared experiences.
By hosting this event, the M.P. Baker Library continues its mission of supporting lifelong learning, historical exploration, and community engagement beyond the classroom.
“The Library is proud to host programs that connect creativity, history, and storytelling,” said Penni Ratley, Director of Library Services at Panola College. “This presentation offers a meaningful opportunity to experience how quilts serve as living records of tradition and communication."
